Each year, Our Western Downs participates in a number of nationally recognised events that celebrate our people, our communities and our heritage. Watch this space for more details on how each district is participating in the following celebrations.
January 26 each year is a special day in Our Western Downs where we stop to recognise and celebrate our locals and community groups that have contributed significantly to our region. Western Downs Regional Council recognises Australia Day awards in the following categories at a local and regional level:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Cultural Awards
- Sporting Achievement Awards
- Community Project/Event Awards
ANZAC Day is a time for our community to come together and show our respect to the servicemen and women who have defended our country. Across our region we participate in dawn services, street parades and commemorative services to remember and honour the fallen, those who have served and those who continue to serve in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping.
National Youth Week
National Youth Week (NYW) is the largest celebration of young people in Australia. Thousands of young people aged 12-25 from across Australia get involved in National Youth Week, and the youth of Our Western Downs are no exception. Each of our districts hosts a number of activities for youth to engage in, which have been designed around the designated NYW theme for the year.
During Seniors Week we celebrate the elderly and acknowledge the years of volunteering and service that they have provided to our community. Our celebrations are an opportunity to enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.
